Jennifer Segers and Gordon Sproule Obtain a Favorable Result in a Medical Malpractice Trial
Huie partners Jennifer “JD” Segers and Gordon Sproule recently obtained a favorable result for a nephrologist and his practice group in a medical malpractice trial in Gadsden, Alabama.
The Plaintiff suffered a massive heart attack and underwent emergency heart surgery in 2018. During the procedure, he received heparin, a blood thinner, and developed heparin-induced thrombocytopenia “HIT”, a rare complication. Plaintiff claimed that the HIT led to necrosis of his digits requiring the amputation of several fingers and toes. Filed in 2020, the lawsuit alleged that several physicians involved in Plaintiff’s care breached the standard of care by failing to promptly diagnose and treat the rare heparin-related complication. The case proceeded to trial on October 5, 2026. After five days of trial, Plaintiff’s counsel dismissed the nephrologist and his practice group with prejudice while the nephrologist was on the stand. The trial continued against the co-defendant cardiothoracic surgeon.
